3D Unwrapping

UV Unwrapping, Seam Planning, Custom UV Mapping, Material Creation, Texture Creation

After you have a 3D Model, you generally want to apply a 2D Image (like a photo of wood) to your 3D Model, this process is referred to as "UV Unwrapping", or "UV Mapping". The easiest way to understand this concept is to think of wrapping a sticker around all outward facing surfaces of a cardboard box with the least amount of stickers (1 in this simple case). You would need to cut your 2D sticker into a plus or cross, then set your box in the center, and wrap the sticker up the sides of the box, being sure to align the cut edges to the best of your ability. This same problem exists in 3D, and on more complex 3D Models than just a box, and can be overcome by means of what is called "Custom UV Mapping". Often one of the most complex steps in the 3D Industry, the 3D Rigging step is a pre-animation step, and allows designers the ability to manipulate a 3D Model with ease and without actually breaking the original model. You can image this step as giving a model artificial bones, muscles, skin, and external controls for specific manipulation requirements.

3D Animation

Keyframing, Posing, Line of Actions, Blocking, Inbetweens, Breakdowns, Timeline, Twinning, Frame Rate, Moving Holds, Polish Pass, Gimbal Lock, Breaking Joints, Squash & Stretch, Dynamics

The second most complex step in the 3D Industry, is the 3D Animation step, which allows animators the ability to take a rigged 3D Model and pose it in various ways, which represent the peak moments of a line of action, and setting key frames at specific points of the timeline to represent these movements. Animators then breakdown these animations and handle things like blocking,, twinning, and the inbetween poses needed to make the animation more fluid. Before making a final polish pass, adding in moving holds for realism and emotion, or breaking joints & squash and stretch for a cartoon feel, or even adding in real world dynamic forces to help bring the animation to life. And finally producing a final animation sequence, which can be added to a scene later and / or rendered to a final product.

3D Scene Creation

The third most complex step in the 3D Industry, is the 3D Scene Creation step, where designers & producers will build up the scene(s) needed in the project's requirements. First by declaring a 3D space for the "Stage", building a landscape, and positioning non-interactive assets on that "Stage". Second the designers & producers will create & choose what materials & textures this scene & it's static models need, while also setting up lights, planning for required shadows & reflections, and setting up cameras which will catch all of the action. Finally the animators & producers will position dynamic, moving & interactive assets in front of the cameras, making final adjustments to both cameras and our dynamic assets as needed. In the end, producing a draft render of the final Scene with & without final animations.

3D Rendering

The final step in the 3D Industry, often thought of as "the easiest" by clients, is actually a whole other level of complication. When rendering a 3D Scene or object, there are a lot of small things coming together to produce a single final frame, which will often be a single frame of a longer video. The renderer must know what the client expects for the final result, as the settings chosen for the rendering will not only adjust what you see as the final product, but also how long it will take to produce each frame of the final product. Different settings coupled with lighting, shadow, or reflection expectations can cause rendering times to go through the roof on a normal desktop computer, so drafts are created before a final render is sent off to a render farm. The render step of 3D is crucial to the final product outcome, and should be understood by the client as crucial step when discussing their expectations with the Project Manager.
